For the next blog in my “Not so Cliché career “series, this one is for the students having non-medical in their 12th. If you think that your chance for a better life will only be by pursuing engineering then you are mistaken.
There are a variety of career options that you can pursue if you just try to look way beyond cliché engineering.
Now I’m not demeaning engineering here. I too am an engineer by profession. But I didn’t want to take up computer science engineering. I felt that everybody was doing that only. So, I researched for something different and finally did my B. Tech in Food Technology. It is also a very good option if you have an interest in food and its qualitative aspects. You can go for this field as well!
But apart from engineering, what else can you do? Gratisoul to your rescue kids!
What to do apart from Engineering?
1. Aviation/ Pilot
Being a pilot is one of the highest paying jobs in India. To qualify as a pilot, one must be fit and fine and apart from your physique. You should also have a great logic and quick decision-making ability. It is a little tough to get the commercial pilot license as you need to qualify plenty of exams which includes written, oral, medical, and physical. But once you qualify for the role, you can work with any airline company on a contractual basis or a permanent basis.
2. Ethical Hacking
Ethical hacking is a bit offbeat career and not many are aware of this field, but it’ll be one of the most growing fields in India soon. If you have a deep interest in computer languages, improve the cybersecurity of our country by opting for this career option. Because as opposed to the unethical hackers, ethical hacking is all for a good cause i.e. to improve the security of the online world.
There are no degree programs in Ethical Hacking, only certification courses. 3. Teaching/ Lecturer
If you are the one that can make any topic understandable, and you also have a deep interest in any one subject, then you can always pursue teaching or become a lecturer. You can use your PCM studies to teach any of these subjects in a school, college, or at a tuition center.
4. Architecture/ Industrial Designing/ Interior Designing
There will always be a need to construct/deconstruct/reconstruct someplace. All it requires an eye for detail and good knowledge of aesthetics.
Don’t consider yourself as an architect or an interior designer? But like to gain knowledge about the technical details of any industrial equipment like mobile phone, automobile, or motorbike? Try industrial designing. It is not only limited to designing products but also requires extensive research and development too.
5. Fashion Designing
If you can imagine yourself as creating dresses for someone, or anything fashion, then fashion designing is the course for you, my friend!
You can take up specialization in this course for footwear, clothing, accessories, etc.

6. Merchant Navy
Merchant Navy serves to facilitate international trade, by transporting cargo, goods, and commercial items across the globe. Are you resilient enough to handle being on a ship for prolonged periods with limited contact with family? Then this can be a highly rewarding career for you, both professionally and monetarily.

If you have a zeal to do something for your country, then go in this field. Defense forms the backbone of a country’s security against external threats. People in Defense are responsible for supporting peace-keeping operations and humanitarian work. There are three primary branches of any country’s defense, namely, the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force. You can choose to serve in any of the three.
Some Top Colleges for Defense: There are no colleges for defense services, you join the NDA (National Defense Academy) after clearing its entrance exam after class 12th.
8. IT/ Animation & Graphics
There is a vast range of opportunities available, including, Graphic Design, Game Design, Digital Art, Web Design, 3D Modelling, Flash Design, Storyboarding, Texturing, Cartoon Design, VFX, Composition & Story Writing, Character Animation, etc.

9. Forensic Science
Do you like to watch investigative, Sherlock-type Tv series and imagine yourself to be in their position? Research more about forensic science. It is a very thrilling field for people who have a detective-type mindset.
There are numerous applications of Forensic Science, and you can work as a Forensic Scientist, Forensic Toxicologist, Crime Scene Investigator, Forensic Anthropologist, Forensic Ballistics Expert, Polygraph Examiner, Digital Forensics Expert, etc.

If you’ve always been interested in the interstellar space objects like the earth, space, and atmosphere, then physical science is your field!

There will always be options for everybody, and you don’t always have to take the path chosen by everyone. You can always take the road less traveled by. Be an inspiration for everyone. Be a face in the crowd rather than being a part of the crowd!
